Graphics - Day 2

We had to use different methods to create letters. The things I did include drawing lots of squiggles and using a highlighter to highlight the letters that I could find within the squiggles. It was stressing finding the letters, so I decided to create a bigger version, which I hope will allow to find more letters. I tried assembling scalpel blades to create different letters. I really liked the idea, I thought it was creative with the way I made use of things I have with me on the day. I scrunched up paper to make the letter ‘k’. I found the task less interesting as it went on, so I started to write the alphabet continuously whilst turning the page until I got to the last letter. I got hooked into doing this idea, so I started doing more and changing it every time, like writing the letters in lower and upper case.

Then, I had to reflect on what I have done and what I did not do or would have done. The things I said that I did not do includes folding paper, different methods of mark making and using clothing or accessory to form letters.

We had to use one of our designs we have done and to use for the alphabet. I realized that I had already done this during the first stage, so I tried further developing the idea. I created a larger version and wrote it more random than just going in circles. I also tried changing my medium, by using an orange highlighter, which I really found myself liking. The work gives an impression of graffiti, with the way it was written and the luminous effect. I titled my works as LINK series. I wanted a simple but straight forward title that describes my work, which I came up with the word link. It describes how each letter is linking from one to another. The title is in capital is to emphasis on the idea of linking letters.

I would further develop the work by using other colour highlighters or try other media like paint. It would be interesting to see when I’m writing the alphabet, the paint just gets lesser as I write each letter, the difference in the thickness of the strokes. This would be interesting because all the other mediums I have used are pen and highlighter, where the tip doesn’t change in thickness.

Next time, I should have brought more materials to work and experiment with. It may be wise to just get a locker, so I can always have access to my equipments and materials.
