Lens based media - Day 1

Lens based media (23/09/13)

Prior to the lesson, we had to take photographs of memories in our environment. We had to choose one of our images and draw that picture onto an A1 size paper. I was not particularly fond of the task, because I don’t really have confident in my drawings skills. I also found difficult how we have to draw a enlarge version on our image to fit an A1 paper. I realized I had to edit parts of my image due to the fact I drew the drawing slightly too big.

My image was the gate of a hair salon just a few seconds away from my house. I have to always walk about 5-10 minutes from my home to my bus stops or the station. So when I see the barrier or the shop depending on whether or not it’s open on the day, I know I am only a few steps away from home. I thought it was very creative and unique to actually paint an image on to the barrier that relates to the shop. Normally, you just see random graffiti’s.

Then we had to crop the image by covering up the not needed sections, to create a new theme or emotion that was different from what I first thought of the photograph. I have a person’s face in my drawing, so whenever I crop parts of her face it gives off an anonymous theme. When it’s crop to the closed mouth, it makes me think about subject matters like secrets, lies and gossip.

I thought this image looks like a hair salon is on fire. It seems like water is pouring down on the right hand corner, which is originally supposed to be a plait. I used charcoal for this task, which made things easier for me as it is very easy to make marks and doing shadings.

We were told to go out and take photographs that suggest fall, crush, jump, echo, sad and happy. I found it harder than expected, in particular jump and echo. I saw some of my classmates ask others to jump for them, I was also part of someone’s pictures where I was asked to jump. Instead of finding people to do certain tasks for me take pictures, I just use myself and take photographs of my feet in certain places to show the different scenarios. I did not make a plan beforehand on what pictures I was going to take. I just went out to search for things that relates to one of the themes.

Fall

 Jump

Crush

 Echo

 Happy
