FMP- week 1 (1)

Futuro
I used the internet to do research on pod houses. I looked into Futuro House, which is a round, saucer shaped prefabricated house designed by Matt Suuronen. There was less than one hundred that was constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was designed as a transportable home that can be located in almost any kind of environment.

Za Bor Architects
I also research into different kinds of functional pods. The Za Bor Architects designed submarine like, colourful pods used as meeting rooms for Internet Company, Yandex.

I think what worked well was that I have found out about various pods with different functions. These researches provide me knowledge of the different pods that already exists and gives me more options to what I can do with my design. I started this project saying I will design a pod house, but after discovering through research the different types of functional pods, it made me rethink about whether or not to design a pod house. For now, I will be doing research into both pods and pod houses and then decide at a later stage, probably during the Easter break.

Today, what did not worked well was that there were no books available in the library to do with pods or pod houses. Instead, I borrowed books about prefabricated houses, which are similar to pod houses. They both have small living spaces. The origami books that I wanted to borrow were all borrowed out, so the librarian told me to make reservation for the books. When the books are returned they will notify me straight away through e-mail.

I think what I should do next is to continue doing research into my project. Also, because I could not find any books in the college library, I should try searching for public libraries that I can go to visit. I know of the Barbican library which is not far from where I live, so I might set as a target to visit there.

Looking at my action plan and timetable, this week is meant for doing research. I met the target of doing research using the internet, but I have not found much from the library, therefore I will have to try visiting public libraries. I also have not been to any exhibitions or galleries, which is what I need to do during this week.

Final Major Project Proposal Pitch

Today I had to present my ideas to my pitch group and Geoff. I showed them my two slides PowerPoint presentation.

The first slide includes research on different functional pods. Also, my visit to The Geffrye Museum.
Initially, I thought about designing a pod house. After I did research I found out about the different kinds of functional pods. This made me think about what kind of pod do I want to make?
Geoff said that we are still in the early stages of the project, so I have time to research and consider what the function of my pod will be.

The second slide consists of pictures I took of things that has a interesting shape or form. Then, from those images it inspires me to create a variety of origami models. I wanted the structure of my pod to be in the form of origami or to be inspired from it. I decided on origami because it is something I have done before for a while and I have always enjoy making them. I searched the internet and found on YouTube, origami tutorials that teaches me to fold various origami.

For my project proposal, Geoff said that I need to write examples of what I am going to do to during the development stage, such as drawing, collage and the techniques I have learnt before during the rotations and the pathway stages. Also, he reminded me I need to add images and do the bibliography and action plan.

I think what worked well was that I have already done some primary and secondary research. It is important to do primary research, which I have showed with my visit to The Geffrye Museum and all the images I took to inspire me to create the different origami pieces.

I think I should of have done more research into pod houses or other kinds of functional pods. When I looked at other people’s presentation, they have many slides of research and are all in depth research into their project. Also, the researched that I have done so far are mostly from the internet. I should be using other methods of researching, like using the resources in the library.

I was mostly quiet throughout the pitch and did not give much feedback to others. This is something I need to improve on by being more vocal during the discussions. Since, the whole point of presenting to each other is to get feedbacks. Moreover, I was about 15 minutes late to the pitch, which made me miss out on the talk that Geoff gave at the beginning. I had to copy the notes from someone else in the group. It does not happen so often me being late, but it is still something I need to work on, by leaving the house a bit earlier.

During the pitch, a peer talked about her visiting an exhibition called Sensing Spaces, which she really enjoyed. Geoff also suggested to us to visit that exhibition. As a target before the next lesson, I should have visited the exhibition. However, firstly I should research information about the exhibition before deciding to go or not.
