Creative week

The task was to draw different designs of what you are making (pod house) on A1 sheet of paper. Also, we had to use at least three mediums. I used a pen, highlighters and brush pens. I think I should have used more variety of medium on the A1 sheet. I think it looked quite dull as a page with the colours mostly black, grey and brown.

The next task was to pick a design I drew and using the materials provided to make that design. I chose the cubic design. The reason is because I am designing a pod house which the form is inspired by origami. The cubic design reminds me of an origami that I folded which consists of many cubes just like that drawing.

I thought what worked well was that I used cardboard to create this model.  I chose to use cardboard because it is easy to manipulate for me to create the cubic forms. I have used cardboard many times before for the previous projects during the pathway stage, so I expected it to work out fine. Although, I think I should have experimented with other materials such as polypropylene. 

On the other hand, I realised with the cardboard, because it is easy to manipulate it is hard to stay in one form.  It is easy to lose its shape. It bends and crushes very easily. I was not impressed with my model. I made it very roughly due to the time that I had, and this shows through my model. It looks very messy, with glue visible everywhere on the model. It also cannot balance on its own, so I struggled to take photographs of it. I decided to use blue tack to stick the model on the table.  


The outcome of my model differs with my drawing as expected since I did not look at my drawing to make the model, I took the idea from the drawing but not copying it exactly.

Today, we had a group discussion, where we showed what we have done so far in our sketchbook.

 There is a variety of origami's I could make, so I decided to start making origami's based on the pictures I took, whether it is inspired from the shape or form etc...

The thing that went well was that I gave feedbacks to my peers. This was something I did not do during the pitch. I mentioned about during visits you should take your own photographs instead of using images from the internet. Also, I suggested to someone who mentioned having an interest to organic forms, to go outdoors and take pictures as well as do observational drawings of organic forms such as trees and plants. Then using those drawings and images to roughly create a variety of models inspire by those forms using cardboards or other easily accessible materials. 

The thing I thought did not went well was my sketchbook being unorganized. There were images and leaflets that fell out when I was showing to the group my sketchbook. Next time I should make sure to stick all the images in my sketchbook, even just using blue tack to temporarily secure the images into the sketchbook. 

The advices given to me were to consider the function and scale for my pod. Also, I was suggested to think about the place of where my pod will be located. Furthermore, they told me to think about the materials I will use to make my mode and what method such as laser cutting and 3D printing. Also, I was suggested to carry on making more origami, so I have more to work with, experiment and develop.

Sanzhi UFO houses

I continued from yesterday doing research into pods and pod houses. I looked into the Sanzhi UFO Houses, also called as Sanzhi pod houses and Sanzhi pod city. The pod shaped buildings resembles Futuro Houses, which yesterday I did research into. The construction began in the beginning of 1978. They have been abandoned buildings that were intended to be vacation resorts.

Furthermore, I looked at Hanse Haus’s Pod House. In the centre of the interior contains a rotating cylinder, which includes four rooms. The cylinder is remote controlled, so a press of the button can let us view the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The entrance for each room in curved for safety reasons as well as visual aspects involved in this design.

What I think I should have done differently is to do some research into galleries and exhibitions that I can go to visit, which they are also relevant to project. 

What I will be doing next is to go to the Sensing Spaces exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. Till now I have not been to many visits, so I decided to go visit the Sensing Spaces exhibition, which was suggested by my tutor. 

In my action plan and timetable, I should be exploring a range of primary and secondary research. I am currently working towards this target whilst doing internet research and planning visits.
