3DD week 3 day 1

Start of a new project called the 3 r’s; record, response and remake. We were each given out an ordinary item. My object was a pack of dishwashing sponges. I tried experimenting and playing with the sponges I got by first randomly stacking them. Then, I tried different methods of manipulating the shape by tying two or three sponges together using elastic band.

Later, we had to do our presentation, which I prepared for over the weekends. We had to present each other’s work and give feedback as a group. The whole point of presenting another person’s work is so to see if that person’s two sheet presentation is clear and understandable to someone who has not seen their work before. As when we get to interviews or sending out digital portfolio, the interviewer would not take a huge amount of time to look at a person’s work. The suggestions made for my presentation was giving titles to the different sections like initial ideas, research and final outcome. Also, my images were too dark to see, so I was suggested to use Adobe Photoshop to brighten the image. I was the last person to present some else’s work, and I was under extreme pressure. I did not think I did really well with explaining the other person’s work, as my mind just went completely blank as I stood in front of the class. I would rather prefer to present my own work than someone else.

3DD week 2 day3

I finished making my model plus the extension building and took photographs of my construction from different angles. I had actually taken my model home to carry on making it, and brought it back to finish it off as I worried that I may not finish it off. After bringing the model back I see the side effects of using cardboard as it has become more fragile especially the outer shell of the building as I have curved it before making it more floppy. This makes me wonder whether I should have used polypropylene instead and the floors and furniture’s to be made out of cardboard's. I felt that the curve of the building has loss its shape, and looks different to the way I originally designed it. However, I am still impressed with the outcome and that I have finally completed the model. Also, I have added the elements I originally missed out on into my model, to create a design that meets the requirements of the people who ill populate the space.

In the afternoon, I went to the library and did research into the materials that I would use to construct the building. I also research into buildings that already existed and have similar form as mine, and see how the structure was made.

I thought I used my time wisely and had time to do research in the library. I took my model home to try and finish it off and brought it back in, so I don’t have a lot to do. I realize that I take a lot of time taking photographs of my model, from the outside to the inside and at different angles. Also, I used lighting from clip on lights to create shadows on wall. I think I took nearly an hour to be satisfied with taking pictures of my model. It gives me a hard time when I have to select a few photographs I will need for the presentation and this post for the blog. Next time, I should take a picture and look back at it to know whether or not it turned out well before deciding to take another image or move on to a different angle.

3DD week 2 day 2

I did research into galleries that I have been to before like the Photographer’s gallery and Parasol unit. I realized from my research that there were aspects in a gallery that I have not considered in my original design. Those things include lift, toilet, staff room and a coffee shop. From this I learnt to understand the needs of the people who will be using the construction. I also learn to consider where those elements should be placed in the building, such as having the staff room next to the reception and the toilets in the coffee shop to make things more convenient.

I decided to redo a sketch of my design plus the things I did not include in the first sketch. I realize that there was not enough space for the toilets and a coffee shop in my building, so I decided to create an extension building. The extension building will housed the coffee shop and toilets. The building would also be shaped in a curve but slightly smaller structure to the main building. The two building would be joined together, where the two curves would meet like the Chanel logo, except the buildings do not intertwine. The inside of the structure on the ground floor where the two curves meet, a section of that wall would be taken out to create a pathway that connects the main building to the coffee shop.

This is my floor plan.

3DD week 2 day 1

I drawn different designs inspired from my test pieces in my sketchbook. I wanted to explore different ideas before deciding on what my final piece would be. Eventually, I still stuck with my gallery design I did on the tracing papers on the first week. I was advised to make a model of my chosen design using cardboards. So, I started making my model using cardboard as it is easy to bend to create a curve. I thought about using polypropylene, but I stuck with the idea of using cardboard as it is easier to cut and manipulate. I cut out a big rectangular piece from cardboard and then curve it using the side of the table. This was a technique I learnt during the 3DD rotation at the exploratory stage. To maintain the curve shaped I came up with a idea on the spot of cutting about 2x30cm cable wire to attach to the corners in order to withhold the curve shape. For the bottom part of the curve I poked holes near the corner, so I can poke through the cable wire and do a knot, so it would not get detached. For the top part I just stuck the cable wire onto the cardboard using masking tape.

I was not entirely enthusiastic or in the mood to work on the day, so I did not get very far with the work and wasted a lot of time. Near the end of the class I was told by Anna to do researches into galleries. This was something I thought I should have done before I started making the model, in case there might be some changes to be made to my design. I am muddling all the steps as I should have done my research, and then made a final plan before making the model.
