Catalysts - 3

I went to the library to find books about minimalism. I borrowed a book titled Minimum by British designer John Pawson.

I had a chat with Sue. She told me using my research to establish the characteristics of minimalist works. We talked about open plan space with no interior division. The use of hidden storages and services, which can be incorporated within the walls or, it can be a partition that separates e.g. the kitchen and bedroom. Also, the limited palette of materials.  However, a different use of material or colour texture is used as a sign for something else. Moreover, the thing I found in common with my research is the big windows. Some of the works use the glass window as framing devices. The idea of framing a picture, when you are outside, a picture is framed of the inside, and when you are inside a picture is framed of the outside.

Sue told me to do research into prefabricated units, which can be seen in a factory or manufacturing site. We discussed that my minimalist house could be a pre fabricated unit that can be situated in different places, and can be rented to people who needs a house in London, either for work or study etc... The talk with Sue I found was really helpful. I can use the elements of minimalist works I established and be inspired for my design ideas.

Over the Christmas holiday, we had to research 20 images for each theme and bring it in on the second day back.

In small groups everyone had to present the research they have done and talk about what theme(s) they choose to explore further. I chose the theme minimalism. Through my research on minimalism, I have come across a few works that are small and narrow. However, the inside of those houses are very big. They kept the space minimal and letting in a lot of natural light, making the interior appear spacious. I also really like there minimal material palette. Moreover, I have thought about incorporating hidden storages into my design. The concept of hidden storages is something I always found fascinating, and this might be the chance where I can create my own hidden storages.

I realized that I don’t contribute much during group discussions. This is something that I should improve on, since I might contribute something that is really useful for that person’s project.

First day back, we went on a trip to visit the V&A Museum. Our task was to go around the museum and take photographs of things that relate to the themes: conceptual, modernism, minimalism, abstract and digital.

I find it easy to take photographs in relations to the themes modernism, minimalism and abstract. I not only took pictures of the display works but also the interior of the museum. I found it particularly challenging to take pictures of the displays that relates to the theme digital. I also had a problem with knowing what conceptual means. Although I have searched the word in the dictionary, I still can’t seem to grasp the meaning of it. I believe it means that it was created for a purpose.

For homework, as we go home we have to take a picture for each theme. This task is for us to look around our surroundings to find things in relations to the themes that have already existed in the real world. I initially thought the task was relatively easy. However, when it came to actually looking and finding things that relates to the theme like abstract, it was difficult. I also struggled with the theme conceptual, mainly because I still have not understood the meaning.

Sustainable Future - week 2 day 3

I got my model printed today. At first glance, I thought it was printed out perfectly. However, the model was very small, but I expected this as I measured it to be small when I was creating the model on Solidworks. I was thankful that I have put a thick base for my beach hut, since the model is small so when I put it in the jar it won’t sit right at the bottom, but in the middle. When I took a closer look at my model, I noticed the table and the chairs did not get printed. I assume the reason being, is because it was too small to be printed. This teaches me a lesson for if the next time I do 3D printing, the details cannot be too small, as it won’t get print. I also noticed that the frames of the hut were starting to break.  It was because the frames were too thin, so it became easier to break. This made me regret that I did not make a slightly bigger model. I should have made an appropriate size model, then to find a jar that could fit the model inside. Instead, I did the opposite and found a small honey jar at home, and it restricted me to make a model that is small enough to fit inside that jar.

I brought my jar in, as I knew everyone’s model was going to be printed today. When I put my model inside the jar, it took me by absolute surprise that it could not fit in. The beach hut could fit inside, but the problem was the base. Even with the constant measuring of the jar, and I clearly remember that I left a few centre metres out. This was not what I expected, and still not know why it has happened. It came as a disappointment, but it was resolved very easily by buying a bigger jar.
