Lens based media - Day 3

For my storyboard I created collages and mixed media work. I did not stick my collage together and only took photographs to save time. My inspiration for the story came from a mixture of a bad dream I recently had, and also when I looked through magazines and find images that I would like to include as part of the story.

The first image shows me sleeping. I used a pen to draw on top of the image, to make the figure look more like myself with dark hair.

This image shows I was waking up to realize I was in a forest. There are fruits floating around, and beside me a tiny figure riding a bike.

Here, I see the two things I’m most scared off, a clown and spiders. The clown was instructing the white flying spiders to go and attack me. I titled my camera to try photographing at different angles, which I though worked well. It seems to have made the paper spiders looks more alive.

In this image I suddenly saw in front of me a bloodless hand coming at me, which seems like it is trying to strangle me. By titling the camera it makes the 2D collage look 3D. it is like the hand is crawling towards the audience.

This image conveys the idea that I was too scared to move and the only thing I thought of was to scream.
I think it makes things seem more scarier not showing the person, but instead just a scream. I also used red oil pastel to make the image look more chilling. I purposely made the image look slightly fuzzy, to express further the terrifying atmosphere in the image with the helpless screaming.

I was woken up from my nightmare with my mum screaming at me as I was late for University, again. I was back in my room, with my head down trying to recover from the dream and ignoring all the shouts.
I thought it would be easier to just draw the image, than to look through tons of magazines to try and find the right pictures. It was a very quick and rough drawing, using oil pastels.

Lens based media - Day 2

24/09/13

We watched Peter Mullan's short film Fridge (1995). It tells a moving yet disturbing story of a young boy trapped in a fridge that was abandoned at the back of a housing estate. A alcoholic couple was there attempting to free the boy. My thoughts on the story was during that time people like to keep themselves to themselves. They would not get into other people's business, as we saw in the film how people shut themselves out from being involve in saving a young child's life.

After watching the video, we talked about what went into creating the film. We are talking about, the director, who directs everyone; script writer, who plays the very important role of writing the script and the makeup artist and costume designer, who put the actors into character. Others include the producer, cinematographer, sound designer etc...
We establish in a story has a beginning, middle and end. Also, there should be a problem in the beginning, a struggle in the middle and a resolution at the end of the story.

In groups of 4, we each had to draw on the same A1 paper six characters that make an impact in our lives. Afterwards we were given numerous drawing tasks to do, such as drawing a place I would want to escape to; earliest childhood memory; a place I would feel imprison etc... I realized looking at others drawing compared to mine that I draw very light that you could barely see in pictures. The next time I should probably use a darker degree pencil or use a pen.

Then, we had to use other people’s drawings to make links with a character and a situation or place. I drew and wrote 5 different characters. We had to give our characters things they do, such as the things they eat in the morning and their occupation. Afterwards, we had to write a problem for each of the characters and a resolution. Then, we had to add the middle, which is where the characters struggle.

Then on the A1 sheet, we had to work together to create 3 storyboards. We split the group in half, so it would be quicker for us finish the three stories. It was a good decision as we finished our stories just before we were told to stop and even had time to exchange each other stories. I worked on the second story, which was about a person who sleeps on a roller coaster. Somehow the roller coaster was activated. The person was woken up and screamed for help. He saw from afar that there was a crack on the track, which made him even more scared and scream even louder. A security guard saw what was happening and went to the booth to deactivate the ride, saving the man’s life.

Lens based media - Day 1

Lens based media (23/09/13)

Prior to the lesson, we had to take photographs of memories in our environment. We had to choose one of our images and draw that picture onto an A1 size paper. I was not particularly fond of the task, because I don’t really have confident in my drawings skills. I also found difficult how we have to draw a enlarge version on our image to fit an A1 paper. I realized I had to edit parts of my image due to the fact I drew the drawing slightly too big.

My image was the gate of a hair salon just a few seconds away from my house. I have to always walk about 5-10 minutes from my home to my bus stops or the station. So when I see the barrier or the shop depending on whether or not it’s open on the day, I know I am only a few steps away from home. I thought it was very creative and unique to actually paint an image on to the barrier that relates to the shop. Normally, you just see random graffiti’s.

Then we had to crop the image by covering up the not needed sections, to create a new theme or emotion that was different from what I first thought of the photograph. I have a person’s face in my drawing, so whenever I crop parts of her face it gives off an anonymous theme. When it’s crop to the closed mouth, it makes me think about subject matters like secrets, lies and gossip.

I thought this image looks like a hair salon is on fire. It seems like water is pouring down on the right hand corner, which is originally supposed to be a plait. I used charcoal for this task, which made things easier for me as it is very easy to make marks and doing shadings.

We were told to go out and take photographs that suggest fall, crush, jump, echo, sad and happy. I found it harder than expected, in particular jump and echo. I saw some of my classmates ask others to jump for them, I was also part of someone’s pictures where I was asked to jump. Instead of finding people to do certain tasks for me take pictures, I just use myself and take photographs of my feet in certain places to show the different scenarios. I did not make a plan beforehand on what pictures I was going to take. I just went out to search for things that relates to one of the themes.

Fall

 Jump

Crush

 Echo

Sad

 Happy

Graphics - Day 3

I had to produce a design piece that would be communicating for my own exhibition that happens in 2033.

I made 10 designs in my sketchbook, and I chose one to develop as my final piece. However, I left it to the actual day to decide on what I was going to do. I’m very disappointed how I didn’t use my time wisely, so I would have brought the right materials I need with me for the day. I ended up spending most of the time testing out colours and materials, which I should have done in advance.

I produced a poster, where I made a model table and shelf using plain paper. In the future, I would want to be doing something in relations to interior, so I thought of drawing elements in an interior. However, to make the idea more creative, I came up with the idea of making mini furniture’s and stick it on to the poster than to just plainly draw the objects.

I thought I didn’t execute the work well. I overdid with the colours. I thought it was too plain to have a white background, so I changed it to a colour background. However, it actually did look much better with a white background. I did not felt my work was finish, so I added lots of different colour oil pastels, however it just looks like too much is going on. If I was to redo the work I would strip down on the use of colours, and probably a different choice of medium, like watercolours or felt tips. I manage to finish on time, but I still wasn’t happy with the way the work turned out.

I took on board on other peoples work, how simple and little they did but work so effective visually. A peer made a book which I thought was a very good idea and different compare to everyone else. I also notice looking at other people’s work that they named their exhibition and given dates and times. These are the things that I should consider adding the next time I do something similar to this task.
